Sagging skin around your eyes not only ages you, but can also reduce your peripheral vision and make you look constantly tired. Thankfully, our plastic surgeon in Chicago can provide you with corrective surgery to help you appear younger and more alert. Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, can correct sagging eyelids, remove fatty pouches beneath the eyes, and remove excess skin from the upper eyelids.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates for this procedure are healthy individuals with no medical conditions that could derail the healing process. Patients should be nonsmokers and should be free of any serious eye conditions.
If you have excess skin or tissue on your upper or lower eyelids, you should consider eyelid surgery. Consider blepharoplasty if you have:
- Bags underneath your eyes
- Droopy upper eyelids
- Excess skin on the lower eyelids
- Excess skin on the upper eyelids that impede vision
Many patients also receive blepharoplasty procedures at the same time as other procedures such as a face lift or skin resurfacing to help reduce the amount of time spent away from their daily routine. Keep in mind that the procedure takes place on part of the face, so the eyelids could appear to be droopy due to relaxation of the forehead skin and eyebrow. Our plastic surgeon in Chicago can help ensure that eyelid surgery is an ideal procedure for you.
Following the Procedure
Initially after the procedure, you’ll spend time in a recovery room so we can make sure you aren’t developing any complications. You’ll be able to go home later in the day, but know that you may temporarily experience the following:
- Light sensitivity
- Watering eyes
- Pain
- Discomfort
- Double vision
- Swelling and bruising
- Blurred vision from the lubricating ointment
We recommend using ice packs on your eyes every 10 minutes every hour the night after surgery. In the following days, use an ice pack 4-5 times throughout the day to help keep swelling to a minimum. Use prescribed ointments to gently clean your eyes and avoid strenuous activities for at least a week following the procedure.
