Patients should stop smoking completely at least 1 month prior to surgery. Nicotine products should also be avoided.

Patients should cease taking blood thinners, aspirin, herbal supplements, Omega 3, fish oils, Ibuprofen, Vitamin E, and all anti-inflammatory medications 2 weeks before surgery. If a patient has high blood pressure or diabetes, they must be under proper medication control for at least 1 month prior to surgery.

Patients must talk with their doctor(s) before they stop taking any medications.

Rest and avoid exertion. Sleep in a recliner or with pillows propped up under your back for at least a week after surgery. Aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, alcohol, and smoking are not allowed for 2 weeks.

Avoid touching your incision and keep your hands clean at all times. Wear protective clothing when outside to avoid contaminating the surgical site.
