Lasers allow the outer layers of the skin to be removed or ablated by applying energy with very rapid pulses of laser light. The advanced Sciton Laser allows ablation with minimal heating of the skin and may be adjusted to provide an effect similar to older CO2-type lasers to reduce coarser wrinkles. Recovery times are shorter than with a CO2 laser and most patients are able to use cover make-up within seven days.

In order to get the most out of your skin resurfacing procedure, it is important that you avoid taking medications or supplements like ibuprofen or vitamin E at least 10 days before surgery. If you are a smoker, you should stop smoking for two weeks before and after the procedure, as it can affect the results and prolong the healing process.

If you are getting small areas treated, such as wrinkles that have developed around your eyes, mouth or forehead, our doctor may use a local anesthetic to ensure that you don’t feel any discomfort. If your whole face is being treated, a general anesthetic may be ideal. If you are only getting certain parts of your face treated, the procedure will take 30-45 minutes. Full-face treatments may take up to two hours.

After the procedure, you will be bandaged in the treated areas and you may be prescribed medicine to help with swelling. It is normal to feel an itching or stinging sensation for 12-72 hours once the procedure is over. Your skin will also become dry and start to peel after approximately 5-7 days. The entire healing process may take anywhere from 10 to 21 days. Make sure to keep your skin moisturized throughout the healing process.
